SOS (Student Over-all Support)
Mary T. Tutoring
offers a unique program entitled
SOS - Student Over-all Support.
This form of private tutoring
includes: studying and
organizational skills, homework
help, confidence building, time
management, test taking, math, and writing
skills. This complete academic
support system can benefit the
gifted student, the student with
ADD/ADHD, the student who needs
remediation, or the student who
is just not working up to
potential.
My
program is available to
students in all grades K-8. I
have
been successful because I
recognize that each child's
needs are different—and I tailor
the program to meet those
needs. I have a bachelors
degree in elementary education
and have taught in the Maryland
educational system for over 5
years. You
can be
assured that I know, not only
the subjects, but what students'
learning abilities are at
particular grade levels.
Study Skills
Behind every good student is
good study skills. Yet, study
skills is not a subject taught
in schools! The first indicator
I look for in a struggling
student is a lack of strong
study skills. It is an area that
can be easily remedied once
students apply certain
strategies and tips. Teaching
good study skills will help
establish good practices
throughout a child's formal
education. Parents find it
amazing how quickly their
children will bounce back
academically once they've
established proper study skills.
The first step is to
determine if certain very
important guidelines are
established in the home and
assess each child's study
routine in five key areas: time
management, organization,
learning styles, concentration
and memory, and taking notes.
Learning
Styles
As part of my extensive study
habits analysis, each child's
individual learning style will
be assessed and based on the
results. I teach tips and
strategies that will help your
student better comprehend and
retain his or her lessons. For
instance, Visual Learning
children learn words and
definitions by reading them over
and over again, and "seeing" the
words in their heads.
Auditory Learning students
tend to recite words and
definitions over and over again,
or have the words and meanings
taped so they can listen to
them. Kinesthetic Learning
students prefer to write out the
words and definitions and draw
pictures to remind them of the
meanings. Knowing a child's
particular learning style will
greatly assist parents and the
students ability to learn. There are many
more study skills such as:
concentration, memory, note and
test taking tips that I will teach.
Learning
Disabilities
Learning problems vary from one
learning disabled child to
another, and I can provide
strategies and tips that meet
your child's unique needs.
Children with learning
disabilities have trouble
keeping up academically with
peers their own age. Their
disabilities may be attributed
to a number of causes including
dyslexia, mental retardation,
autism, or Attention Deficit
Disorder (ADD), among others.
Children diagnosed with these
disabilities can be taught ways
to overcome their handicaps,
especially when given highly
personalized instruction
tailored specifically to the
needs of that child.
It is my experience that
students with learning
disabilities achieve greater
benefits when tutoring is
performed in the child's home.
This is particularly important
for learning disabled students
who do not cope well in crowded,
often chaotic surroundings such
as their classroom or group
therapy. Individualized home
tutoring in a controlled
environment helps restore
confidence in a learning
disabled student and enables
them to more efficiently reach
their full potential. |
